My grandmother was a feisty woman, full of life. Over the past few years, she began to display increasing signs of dementia. As the disease progressed, she was ultimately robbed of her ability to live independently, communicate freely and spontaneously recognize her family. It was heartbreaking to see her trapped in her own mind and I mourned the loss of the grandmother I knew before she was ravaged by this terrible disease. On February 1, 2016, my grandmother passed away. She is no longer at the mercy of dementia and I pray she has found peace.
